The French medicine-cabinet emulsion for minor burns and red, heated skin
Biafine Emulsion is a trolamine emulsion for minor, superficial burns and hot, red skin, and a staple of French family medicine cabinets. Its active substance, trolamine, comes in a light, fluid oil-in-water base with avocado oil, squalane and paraffin that helps limit water loss and keeps the skin supple while it recovers. Registered as a medicine in France, it is indicated on its leaflet for first and second-degree burns, other non-infected skin wounds and skin redness after radiotherapy. It comes in a 93g tube for the home and a 186g tube for families or long summers.
The texture
A white, fluid emulsion that spreads in seconds and feels cool on hot skin. It is meant to be applied in a thick layer and left to soak in, not rubbed hard, so it works well on areas that are too sore to massage. It has a light, clean scent.
Who it suits
- Minor kitchen or household burns, once cooled under running water
- Skin that feels hot and red after too much sun
- Skin redness after radiotherapy, as listed on the leaflet
- Anyone wanting one simple first-aid emulsion at home
Worth knowing before you buy: Biafine contains parabens and fragrance. Do not use it on infected, bleeding or oozing wounds, near the eyes, or as a sunscreen. It is meant for minor, superficial burns and small, non-infected wounds, not for deep or extensive burns.
Which size to choose
The 93g tube is enough for occasional first aid at home. The 186g tube suits families, holidays in the sun, or anyone who needs several applications a day over a few weeks.
